2021-09-07 - First two days at Big Jim's
Lac la Biche - Big Jim's Place
Tuesday - Day 1
I arrived at Big Jim's place at 1:00. Jim met me on the driveway and helped me unload my van.... I had a lot of my toys with me.... Two sea planes, two quad copters, my wake foil gear, and my foiling gear!
Blaine arrived shortly after I did, followed by Mike and then Brad. It was great to see them!
It was a beautiful day, but there wasn't much wind. Jim and I blew up our wings, which more or less killed what wind there was. Went out on our SUP's anyway, but the wind was too light to hold the wings in the air, so we didn't have much success.
Blaine, Brad and I then set up our Foilboards so they are all ready to go. We also took some turns on the jetski blasting around. In calm water it will get up to 60mph!
When it started to get dark, Brad set up his telescope and he was showing us some stars and telling us all about them using a phone app.
No wind, but all in all, a pretty good first day!

Wednesday, Day 2
We woke up to another beautiful, but calm day. I got out my quad copter and tried flying it off the deck over the lake. It was the first time I have flown it over water. It is funny, I am very comfortable flying it over land, but over water, my heart was racing and my hands were even shaking. I did three flights, all on one battery, so less than six minutes total. On my last flight I caught a photo of Blaine on an SUP.

I quickly put the Quad away, and got out my SUP and went with Blaine, Brad, and mike Mike across to the Mission Church and back, and then over to Scott Currie's cabin. Blain and I stopped in and had a nice chat with him. He is here for the week.

Kent arrived with his trailer, and we helped him back it in next to the back cabin.
After lunch, the wind seemed to be picking up a bit, but was from the South East, which is directly off shore. Blane, Brand and I all rigged our 7.0 Flyers.

I sat on the beach with Kent, while I let Blaine and Brad be the wind dummy's. Mike took out his 11m Kite and Big Jim helped him launch it. He got it up in the air a few times, but not for long, and eventually gave up.

| Mike - getting it up! |
Blaine and Brad had a nice slow cruise around the bay. Brad got foiling a few times for short reaches, but what wind there was was dropping off. Brad said he had never sailed home in such calm water.
Mike then decided to try his kite foil board behind the jetski. I drove for him. We had a lot of fun and he made many valiant efforts, getting a little further each time.
Handre came for a visit so we sat by the shore and had a beer. on the deck. Handre told us that he was still recovering from COVID. It apparently hit him very hard. He was very sick for 10 days and is still feeling weak but he finished isolation and is now back at work. Wow. He was double vaccinated and wearing protective gear, but still got it from a patient. It is obviously real!
He as moved to Comox now, but is still working 10 days a month in Lac La Biche, so he will be around over the next few days. Even though he has completed his isolation period he is still wearing a mask for our protection.
Brad cooked burgers for supper.
Early to bed for everyone - ready for some sailing tomorrow.
